Since the beginning of the tournament, coach Southgate has used both of these players on both wings of the England team, although they both play as right-backs. Due to Luke Shaw's injury, Trippier had to reluctantly take on the left-back role. This limited his ability to support attacks, making England's left wing almost ineffective from the beginning of the tournament.
