The England team may have to meet very strong opponents in the round of 16 of Euro 2024 if they receive disappointing results in the final match of Group C.
England beat Serbia 1-0 in their opening match before drawing 1-1 with Denmark, meaning another point from their last match would see them qualify for the knockout stages.
However, a defeat in the final match against Slovenia would be a real disaster for Gareth Southgate's team.
If England qualify, they could face anything from previous World Cup winners to relatively minor sides.
Let's take a look at the opponents that the Three Lions may face in the round of 16:
Group C situation after the first 2 matches. |
If England finishes third in Group C
If England get through the group stage as one of the best third-placed teams, they will meet the top team in Group F, which seems likely to be either Turkey or Portugal. Both teams have a win and still have to face each other.
But no matter what, it will be a difficult match for the Three Lions. Portugal is one of the leading contenders for the title, while Türkiye is backed by some of the most passionate fans at Euro 2024.
If England finishes second in Group C
If Southgate's side finish in second place, they will play against the top team in Group A. There are only two teams that can top Group A: Germany and Switzerland.
Accordingly, the home team is currently leading after two wins and scoring 7 goals. They will face Switzerland in the final match and if defeat is avoided, the "tanks" will take the top spot in the group.
Of all the teams England don't want to face in the round of 16, Germany is certainly the name that comes up first.
If England top Group C
If England take top spot in the group, they will face the third-placed team from Groups D, E or F.
In Group D, the Netherlands and France are sharing the top spot and are unlikely to finish third. This leaves the most likely choice as Austria. While Poland has officially been eliminated.
In Group E, Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine each won 1. Meanwhile, Belgium is at the bottom of the table with 0 points. This can be considered the most difficult group to predict because all teams still have a chance to advance to the next round, and at the same time, nothing is clear.
As for Group F, Turkey and Portugal are expected to come out on top. Things can change, but given the current situation, Georgia or the Czech Republic are the most viable options for third place. .
